Description: A rendered image of real data from an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), showing a restriction enzyme protein, EcoKI, (green) causing loops in DNA molecules (blue). Restriction enzymes cut up double-stranded DNA, and are believed to be a mechanism evolved by bacteria to resist attack from viruses, and to help in the removal of viral sequences.

Each DNA molecule is 1.5 kilobases in length [roughly 450 nanometers (nm)], and the enzyme has a volume of roughly 750 nm³. The image was generated using real AFM height and width data and was then processed using Scanning Probe Image Processor (SPIP), Lightwave, and Photoshop software.
